Who Is a Midwife?

A midwife is an individual who has completed an accredited midwifery education program that follows The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Essential Competencies for Midwifery Practice and the ICM Global Standards for Midwifery Education. To be recognised as a midwife, one must also meet the legal requirements to practice and maintain demonstrated competency in midwifery.

Midwifery encompasses care for women during pregnancy, labour, and the postpartum period, as well as care for the newborn. This includes birth as a holistic process and a natural phenomenon and the ability to offer preventive measures, early detection of any health concerns, and the coordination of medical help or emergency measures when necessary.

Although the knowledge base for midwifery draws from various disciplines such as science and sociology, it is practised within a professional framework centred on autonomy, partnership, ethics, and accountability.

Midwife-led Birthing Unit

A Warm, Welcoming Place to Give Birth: Our Midwife-Led Unit (MLU)

At Fernandez Hospital, our Midwife-Led Unit is a specially designed birthing suite run by our experienced, professional midwives, located right next to the main labour ward. It’s a comforting space created for mothers with healthy, uncomplicated pregnancies who want a calm, natural experience—while still having quick access to an obstetric team if needed.

Childbirth Classes

Embarking on the journey to parenthood is both exciting and overwhelming. It’s natural to feel a mix of joy, anticipation, anxiety, and uncertainty. At Fernandez Hospital, our Birth without Fear childbirth classes draw inspiration from the Lamaze philosophy, blending proven techniques with our own compassionate approach. Our goal? To empower expectant parents with knowledge, confidence, and a supportive environment—helping you make informed decisions at every stage of pregnancy, birth, and beyond through the best pregnancy care services in Hyderabad.

Vaginal Birth After Cesarean

A VBAC is a Vaginal Birth After a Caesarean Section (VBAC). Choosing a VBAC can be a transformative option for some women who have previously undergone a C-section. VBAC offers several advantages, including no additional surgery, reduced risk of infection, less blood loss, a quicker return to everyday activities, and a lower likelihood of complications such as placenta previa and placenta accreta—especially important if you plan on having more children. Many mothers also cherish the experience of a vaginal birth and appreciate the sense of empowerment it can bring.

At Fernandez, our top-notch midwifery services in Hyderabad encompass VBAC support as well, grounded in the latest evidence-based guidelines. Here’s how we ensure you and your baby receive the very best care:

Hydrotherapy

At Fernandez Hospital, we understand that labour can be an intense experience, and we’re here to make it as comfortable and empowering as possible. That’s why we offer Hydrotherapy, a natural, effective method for pain relief during labour.

Hydrotherapy involves immersing the body in warm water, which has been scientifically proven to reduce pain perception, increase comfort, and help you feel more in control during your labour and birth. Studies show that women who use hydrotherapy during their labour report higher satisfaction with their birth experience, especially during the second stage of labour. They feel more relaxed, less stressed, and better able to handle the surge of contractions.

Waterbirths

At Fernandez Hospital, we offer the choice of a water birth, a beautiful and natural birthing option that provides a calming and supportive environment for both mother and baby. Water birth involves giving birth in a warm, soothing tub of water, under the expert supervision of our experienced team of midwives. Our birthing pools create a seamless transition for your baby, moving gently from the warmth and safety of the womb to the soothing environment of the pool, enhancing the birth experience.

Doula Services

At Fernandez Hospital, we prioritise not just clinical excellence but also emotional well-being during childbirth. Our professional doula services in Hyderabad offer continuous support throughout labour and birth, ensuring a calm, confident, and positive birthing experience.

A doula provides physical, emotional, and informational guidance, helping both you and your partner feel supported every step of the way. Breech Clinic

Babies lying bottom first or feet first in the uterus (womb) instead of the usual head-first position is called breech babies. Our dedicated team of doctors, midwives, and physiotherapists specialises in caring for pregnancies where the baby is in a breech position (bottom- or feet-first) rather than the usual head-first position. While breech presentation is common earlier in pregnancy, most babies naturally turn head-first by 36–37 weeks. Only about 3–4% remain breech at term. If your baby is still breech at 32–34 weeks, your midwife or obstetrician will refer you to our Breech Specialist Clinic.
