At Fernandez Hospital, we believe in providing the highest level of care, not just clinically, but emotionally too. That’s why we offer the professional support of a Birth Doula—a trained expert dedicated to guiding you through the entire labour and birth process.
A Doula provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support throughout labour, helping you and your partner stay confident and comfortable as you navigate this transformative experience. From the moment you choose to work with a Doula, she’ll take the time to get to know you and your preferences during pregnancy and continue supporting you during the immediate post-birth period with initiation of the first breastfed, skin-to-skin care and immediate newborn care.
Why Choose a Doula at Fernandez? Research consistently shows that continuous support from a Doula leads to numerous benefits, including:
Shorter labour
Lower chances of a cesarean birth
Reduced need for pain medication
Less need for medical interventions
A greater sense of confidence and support for partners
Facilitating mother-baby bonding
Immediate breastfeeding initiation
While your Midwife offers exceptional care, she may not be available for the entire duration of labour due to clinical shifts. A Doula is 100% focused on your physical and emotional needs, helping you with relaxation techniques like breathing, massage, visualisation, and position changes. She supports both you and your partner, ensuring you’re both confident and comfortable throughout the journey.
A doula offers essential support across different birth experiences—whether it’s a vaginal birth, cesarean delivery, induced labor, breech birth, or a complicated delivery. By providing ongoing emotional, physical, and informational assistance, they empower the birthing person to navigate the process with confidence and make well-informed decisions throughout labor and delivery.
For caesarean births, your Doula is there with you and your birth partner in the Operation Theatre and recovery room, providing emotional support and assisting with the initial breastfeeding. The Doula can help allay fears before, during, and after the surgery. She also provides informational support which can help you create a caesarean birth plan. Your Doula will be there with you and your partner in both the Operation Theatre and the recovery room to provide emotional support. She also helps with breastfeeding after the Caesarean birth.
During induction of labour, your Doula will prepare you for the process and offer telephonic support while the induction is on-going. She will join you during the active phase of labour, when her presence will be most required, offering the much-needed comfort and guidance.
For epidural births, your Doula helps facilitate position changes to reduce the likelihood of instrumental deliveries and ensures you feel comfortable every step of the way. The physical and emotional comfort offered by a Doula helps you cope with the sensations until you are in active labour, and allows you to decide if you do want an epidural. Your Doula can also help facilitate position changes on the bed when you have your epidural to reduce the likelihood of having an instrumental birth.
What Does Doula Support Include?
One prenatal visit which will include discussing the kind of support you want during labor your medical history and your birth preferences. In labour, the Doula will offer early labour telephonic support while you are at home will be in touch with you over the phone once your labour starts and will join you in the hospital during the active phase. She will stay with you throughout your labour until the first breastfeeding is initiated.
One postnatal visit which will include discussing your recovery, breastfeeding and baby care. A backup Doula will be provided, if the Doula you have signed up for is not available at the time when your labour starts.
What Is Not Included in Doula Support?
While a Doula is an essential part of your birthing team, she does not:
Perform medical tasks or provide clinical advice
Make medical decisions for you or speak to clinical staff on your behalf contradict the care provider’s orders.
Replace the role of your partner in providing emotional support
At Fernandez Hospital, our experienced Doulas are here to help you create a blissful, empowered birth experience. Their non-medical support, combined with the expertise of our clinical team, will help you achieve a birth experience that is as comfortable, joyful, and meaningful as possible.
